10/22/10 - Just got the boat back and it was a great day for a dive. I found three nice teeth one over 5", the water temp was almost 50 deg and the visibility was around 6 in. The current is running slow so the vis should get even better.


10/17/10 - I did very well today. The four teeth in the second photo are nice. The largest was 3.5". I had to pull the boat for repairs so I will not get to dive until Thursday.


10/16/10 - I did pretty well. The large tooth is just over 5" but the very tip is chipped. The smaller one in just about flawless. The current was strong and the vis was bad so this is all I found.


01/14/10 - The current was pretty strong today and I had trouble staying in one place. I did pretty good and found a 3.75" Meg and a 2-1/8" hemi. I do not ever remember finding a larger hemi so it was a really good dive.


01/13/10 - I wore a better hood and was not nearly as cold. The water was 40 on the bottom. I found some really nice teeth. The largest in the center photo is over 5.5" and the other Meg is 4.25". The lower Mako is 2.25". The visibility was incredible. With my light I could see over 2 feet. It was about as good as I have seen it here. I would trade the vis for warmer water. I stayed down over an hour and was pretty cold when I surfaced.


01/12/10 - Like most of the East coast we have had a cold spell lately. This is the first day that I could get out that it has been over 50 deg. All I can compare it to is laying in a snowbank for almost an hour. You may be wearing a coat and hat but it still is really cold. The temp was 39 on the surface and 38 on the bottom. It was the coolest I have seen the water in over ten years of diving near Savannah. It reminded me of my ice diving days in PA. I found quite a few teeth though. The nicest were a 4" Meg and a 2.9" Mako.


12/31/09 - Today I got out and my light was dead. I had to go down with no light. It was pitch black and I could not see any surface light at all. The good thing is when there is no vis I am not distracted looking around old bone beds that I picked over on past dives. I got into what felt like a good spot and dug hard. I found two flawless teeth over 4.5". It reminded me that digging is the way to go even when the vis is good.

12/30/09 - I got out late and the current was very strong. I dropped down and spent the entire dive trying to dig in and not be swept away by the current. As it was I was only down about a half hour and was dragged throughout the dive. From beginning to end I was dragged about 100 yards downriver. When I got on the boat my boat captain said he could hardly see me when I came up.


12/23/09 - My last day of diving before Christmas was a good one. The water is getting really cold. It was just below 50 today. Still a good day. The Megs all had some chips and the largest was around 4". I also found a cool vert. that measures just over 2" across.


12/22/09 - I did pretty well today. The visibility was better and I found some nicer teeth. The lower Mako was pretty cool and the larger tooth is 5.5". The smaller one is around 4" and looks really nice. I will not know for sure until I clean the bourrelet cleaned off.

12/17/09 & 12/19/09 - This is it for two days of diving in coolllddd water. The vis was really bad because of a lot of rain. The worst thing about it is I found a decent tooth one of the days and put it in my bag. Because of the low vis, or the thick gloves, or the cold water, or just not paying attention it was not in my bag when I got to the boat. One nice tooth in two days and I leave it on the bottom.


12/15/09 - Did pretty well. The vis was bad but I found two really nice small teeth.


12/12/09 - The vis was pretty good but the water was cold. Most of these teeth were partly exposed. In the summer I usually dig a lot due to the low vis but in the colder water with thick gloves that is hard to do so I tend to dive more where I can find something that I can see. The tooth on the left is pretty much perfect, but the one on the right is really amazing. the blade has some cool twists to it.

12/10/09 - First dive in two weeks. The water is very cold but it was good to be back. The largest tooth is 5". The nicer one is 4.25". I also found the stingray barb. That reminds me what I am in the water with.

11/25/09 - Happy Birthday to my Sister. I found a nice 4.5" lower tooth and some cool Mako teeth and small megs. The water was really clear. I had almost a foot of vis and saw many of these teeth.

11/24/09 - I found two really nice 5" teeth. One on each dive. I found them both by digging. I also found some smaller chipped teeth.

11/23/09 - I had a good day. The water was cool but clear. The two nice teeth by the whale tooth are close to 4" and very nice.

11/22/09 - Another good day. I found the three nicer teeth very close together in a 5 minute span. I spent another 20 minutes in the area but did not find more. Sometimes I can find many teeth bunched together. All in all another good day.

	11/21/09 - The water was super clear. I found most of the small teeth by sight. I had almost a foot of vis. The largest tooth is about 4.5" All three were pretty sharp.

11/20/09 - I went to the same spot as yesterday on my first dive. I found the smaller teeth there but not much more. I moved into the mud and started digging on the second dive and found most of the larger teeth by digging. It was a pretty good day.


11/19/09 - Today I was diving on a hard bottom that I dive very often. Most of the time I just find small teeth here that are uncovered. I decided to dive there because the current has slowed and I finally have 6" of vis again so I wanted to go where I did not have to dig. I was swimming along and this tooth was laying right on the hard bottom. I could not believe it when I saw it laying there because it was too big for the current to drag in and the hard bottom does not usually change enough to fully expose something like this. I just stared at it a it for a minute before picking it up. It measures just under 6-1/2" (6.45"). It is in great condition with the exception of a few small nicks in the blade. I found a few other teeth worth showing but I have not even looked at any of them today. I am still enjoying this one.

11/13/09 - Not a very good day. The finds were not the problem.

I got to the boat and one of the tanks I had was empty. That meant I could only do one dive. Then the boat would not start. We had to drive to a boat shop and get new ends for the cable. We got the boat started finally.

The tides were very strong and the vis was way down. The fun really started when my dive was over. When the tide is strong my boat captian drops me off where I want to dive and moves the boat down river 50-100 yards. That way when I come up I can usually get back to the boat. If not he can drop the anchor line and come get me. This time I came up in front of but also to the side of the boat and was drifting quickly. I could not get to the boat but the boat had no power so he could not get the boat started. He untied the anchor line so the boat would drift along with me and I could swim to it. It took me about 15 min. to get to the boat. By that time the wind had pushed the boat onto the bank. The tide was going out so we were going to be on dry land in a short time. We started working the cable, and got the boat started. The anchor was stuck on a cable so we could not get it up. We finally got the anchor to the boat and had to release the cable with pliers. I was so tired from the swim and pulling the anchor up that I could not have done another dive.

Still we got back OK, we had the parts to fix the boat and I found two teeth in the dark so it was not all bad. The largest tooth is over 5.5" but it does not have much enamel.


11/11/09 -The current was pretty strong, but the vis was pretty good. I tried the spot I found the Mammoth partial tooth in yesterday. The upper tooth in the first photo is very nice and just over 5". I also found a sloth tooth. It was only my second one ever so it was a good day.


11/08/09 - I tried a different spot in the river I am in. The current was moderate and the vis was good so I let the current drag me down the river. During the first dive I hit a spot with some bones. I found some pretty nice meg teeth and a partial mammoth tooth. The nicest tooth is 4-3/4".


I found these teeth in a cooler that I take out diving sometimes. I must have put them in there after a dive recently. I am not sure when I found them, but a couple are pretty nice.


Another good day with great vis. I found quite a few teeth and many were very nice.


	11/06/09 - The visibility was way up (6-8 in.) and the current was running slow. I found most of these during the first dive right on the surface near where I dove late last week. By the second dive I had cleaned out the small bed of teeth. The largest in the first photo and the largest in the 3rd photo were 5-7/8" so both were very large. It was a good day.


11/03/09 - I tried the same spot as Sunday and did a little better. The vis was still absolute zero on the first dive and most of the second. I did get about 2 inches of vis near the end of the second dive though. I dug a lot around the small area in the large bone bed where I had pulled out a large number of teeth before and that was where many of these came from. I am hoping the vis will be better by next week when the current picks up.


11/01/09- I had a great time at the Albany Show. Saw some old and new friends. Sitting at these shows looking at all of the fossils all you can think is how much you want to get back into the water. I found a hole diving once a few years ago where I picked a bunch of teeth out of a very small spot in a large bone bed. I found a lot of teeth over a couple of months in the bone bed. I lost the spot and could not find it again when I went back a few months later. I decided to try to find that spot again and actually found it. I know I hit it because there was a buried crab trap in the middle and there were thousands of broken fossilized bone fragments everywhere but very few teeth. I did miss some though and I got these three today. The current was picking up and the visibility was awful. I had absolute zero vis the entire first dive. The only way to see my gauges was to set them on my light and then set the gauge on my mask so I could see the needle against the background of the charged gauge. This is why I do not dive with a digital dive computer. I can not usually read the numbers. I did find a 5" tooth and had a lot of fun going back to that spot.

10/30 I went back to the same spot as yesterday for a dive and again the vis was great. I would guess 6" again. I only made one dive because I needed to get ready for the Albany Artifact and Fossil Show tomorrow. I hated to leave because I know as the current picks up I will wish for this kind of vis. I must have picked all the good surface finds yesterday. I ended up spending my dive digging through the mud. I found a really pretty gomph cap. Not too much in teeth though.

When I dig I run into a lot of horseshoe crabs that scurry away when I bump them. This is the most common critter I run into Today I ran across a bunch of them while digging. When digging through the hard packed mud or clay sometimes I can only move my fingers an inch or so at a time. I sometimes feel something slippery but can not feel more than an inch of the shape until I dig around it. If I am lucky it is a nice tooth. Sometimes it is 30 seconds or so before I know if it is a whole tooth, chipped tooth or something else. The shell of the horseshoe crab sometimes feel like enamel from a tooth so I think I found something only to have my tooth move away. On more than one occasion I have felt a shell and start to move on and backup to be sure only to find that it was a really a tooth that I almost left behind. The worst are the blue crabs because when the vis is zero they feel like teeth but they pinch when you pick them up.


10/29/09- A few months ago I was diving and my friend that was watching the boat moved between a couple of sandbars to fish while I dove. We always assumed it was shallow between the bars. When I cam up he said that it was very deep. It turns out the current heads to shore and bounces off.. I dove the hole and cleaned up for a week. After that week I did not find much. I went back today and the vis was great. Most of these teeth were very close to each other. I must have missed this section before. The big tooth in the first photo is over 5". The visibility was great. I had about 6-8 inches with my light. It does not sound like much but it is about as good as it gets.


10/25/09 - I had a really good day. A friend and his Son came out to watch me dive. We had a great time and I was glad to see them again. I found a really nice gomph cap that went back with them. (I should have taken a photo first). I brought back three nicer Megs (top) The largest was a lower that measures around 4.5". The visibility was spectacular (about 18" to 2 feet with a light) because of the unusually slow tides. I found some whale teeth, some chipped Megs, a piece of fossilized wood, and a couple of shark verts. Because of the vis I also found a bunch of Makos, small Megs, a couple of hemis and some small teeth. I need more days with this kind of vis.


10/24/09 - I found a few teeth today. One was right at 5" but a little chipped. The nicer one (center and right photos) was around 3.5 in. I also found some nicer Makos.

	11/23/09 -- This was the best day I had in several weeks. I found a whale mandible, a large ear bone and A really nice whale tooth. I also found two billfish rostra. The pectin shell has both sides which is rare. I usually find a lot of pectin shells but I rarely find both sides hinged together.
	I found some broken Meg teeth, some really nice Mako teeth and a chipped benedini. The largest Mako was just over 2.5"
	I also found four nice Megs with sharp tips.
	The two largest of the four are just over 5" and very nice.

10/19/09 - I made one dive. The water has cooled to the upper 60's. I did not find much but at the end of the dive I found a bone bed that looked promising. I was low on air and could not mark it so I hope I can find it again. The largest tooth was around 4.75"


10/17/09 - I found six fairly nice teeth today in two dives. All have sharp serrations but none have a sharp tip. Still the ones on the right are in good condition and all have really cool shape.

10/15/09 - The water is cooling. I had 74 degrees. Not bad but cooler. The teeth on the left are all about 4"-4.5". They are serrated but none of them are in top condition. Still a pretty good dive.

10/13/09 - This is my first dive back diving after the Orlando Fossil Show. I went back to the spot where I found the dugong jaw bone. I found some teeth, the largest of which has no enamel. The tooth on the right is the nicest and about 4.25".


10/03/09 Today I found a lower section of Jaw (mandible) from a dugong. The posters at thefossilforum.com are teaching me about these so I am learning as I go. Here is the link to the discussion on thefossilforum . This will be my last day of diving before the Orlando Fossil Fest on Oct 10 and 11.
The holes on the inside were for nerves and blood supply. The ridges on the right side are where the teeth were.

	I also found some Shark Teeth.


10/01/09 - The water was really clear. I found a bunch of teeth today. Left: Megs and some larger Makos. Center: A really nice 3" Mako Right: Makos, Smaller MEgs, Whale Teeth and some misc. fossils.


09/30/09 - Left the nicer finds of the day. A 3.25" Mako next to a 5" Meg. Center a 3" Mako by the 3.25" Mako. Right: All of the teeth from today.

09/28/09 I found some nice teeth but nothing really spectacular.


09/23/09 The teeth from today. The last two photos show the nicer teeth. They have nice sharp tips and serrations.


09/19/09 - The nicest find of the day was a nearly complete gomph Tooth. It is one of the nicest that I have found.


09/19/09 - The college that I teach for was on break part of this week so I took advantage of the time off and went diving. Not every day was good but it was great to get out on the water. It is really cooling off. Today I found a large whale tooth core and two really nice larger Meg teeth.


09/18/09 - I really cleaned up today. I found six nicer teeth the best is in the last photo.


09/17/09 - I found one really nice Meg tooth. The serrations are a little rough but still pretty nice.


09/16/09 - Not much today but I did find a cool Mako tooth.


09/15/09 - I did find one really nice smaller tooth. There is a lot of pyrite in the bourrelet of ths one.


09/12/09 I found a good number of nicer teeth. The nicest was the 5" tooth in the second and third photos. I could not believe the visibility. When the current was running hard I had between 6-8 inches with my light which is VERY good. It is nice to be able to see something for once.

09/13/09 - The vis was really good again. The water was noticeably cooler though. It is funny how a drop from 82 deg to 78 deg can feel cooler but I was pretty cold when I got to the boat after my second dive. All in all I guess four hours underwater in 78 degree water can cool you down in a thin suit. I hate the thought of moving to a heavier suit but that day is coming soon. These were the four nicest teeth that I found Sunday. The largest tooth was just over 6" and a really fat tooth.


A few weeks ago I came across a very small hole that was full of fossils. I cleaned it out in a week. The last two dives in the spot I did not find anything. But it was fun while it lasted. These are from the first few days.


08/13/09 - This tooth looks like it would fall apart in your hands. It should break into four pieces by touching it. I have found several that look like it. Except this one is VERY solid. There is no movement at all in either side of the root or the blade. I put a lot of pressure on it and it is not the least bit loose. I wonder if it was falling apart before it was fossilized and was stabilized during fossilization?

Two nicer Megalodon Teeth

The nicer teeth from today. The lower Mako tooth is 3" long.

08/11/09 It was a beautiful day out there yesterday. I did not think I would make it out but I got out for awhile after work and took a couple of photos of the river.

I found three nicer Megalodon Teeth and some broken Meg and Mako Teeth. Any day on the water is a good one and this was no exception.

08/10/09 I found some nicer Megalodon teeth today. The bad news is I might be too busy to dive for a week or two. The large one is just over 5-3/4". All these have sharp tips and are in great condition. The Mako tooth is around 2" and has some awesome coloring.

The Megalodon teeth in the first photo below are all 5" teeth. In the second photo shows two really nice whale teeth and two billfish rostra. I also found a hemipristis, several Makos and some more Megalodon Teeth.

	08/07/09
Today I found this 21" section of fossilized lower jaw bone (mandible) from a Miocene period, (2,000,000+ years old) dolphin. Possibly identified as pomatodelphis. It was buried deep in the mud. When I first felt it I thought it was a very large rib bone. When I pulled it out I was shocked to see what it was.

I also found 11 nice Megalodon Teeth and a couple of Makos. Many of the Megalodon teeth have sharp serrations and tip. It was nice to have two good days in one week!!

08/05/09

For Shark Week I thought I would share the teeth I found diving today. The diving has been slow lately but today I found two 5.75" Megalodon teeth and some really nice smaller ones. I even found a nice 2" lower Mako tooth. The current is running slow so the visibility was better than it has been in awhile. I had about 6" with my light.

07/25/09 - I had off this week and did a lot of diving. I found these six teeth all over 5". It is the best week I have had in a long time. It will be tough not diving until next Friday.

This massive tooth measures 6.2" on the longer side and 6.05" on the shorter side. It is almost exactly 5" wide. There is a small chip on the left side but it is still a MASSIVE principal tooth.


These two measure over 5.75" each and are nearly flawless.


These three are also from this week and over 5.25" each. They are slightly flawed but awesome teeth.

07/19/09 - Finally got out today. Found several nice teeth. These are the nicest.

05/16/09- I found a very nice Mammoth tooth today (above) and a section of a crocadilian jaw (below). It broke when I got to the boat but it will fit back together nicely.

Thurs. 5/14/09 One nice Meg tooth and a large piece of mammoth tooth. Nothing else too special.

Thurs 05/07/09 I went out tonight and did pretty well. The current was very strong and I had absolutely no vis. I got back into a deep spot where the boat I wrote about was. There were some pilings there and I dug around and found some nice Megs.
	Here are the finds for the day. The larger one measures just a touch over 5".
The two smaller ones are in great condition.


This is a cool deformed tooth. The final few pics show the shape. The left side shows where the serrations end just before the bottom of the root. It is a really cool tooth and it will be in my collection for years to come.

	Fri 05/01/09 and Sat 05/02/09 Saturday I came up empty but Friday found several nice teeth. The big one in the photo is 5-7/8" and the others measure between 3.5"-4.25".

Wed 4/29/09 I was diving in a spot that I have dove before and dug some nice teeth out from under a sunken boat. The current has dug a large hole under the boat and as I reached under the boat I felt some loose bones including some really nice megs. It kind of freaks me out though. The boat is in the middle of one of the places that I dive. You are going along at 45 feet and then you drop into a hole about 6 feet deeper. The hole is not very big but it is full of metal debris from the boat. Towards one end the hole slopes even deeper. As you crawl down that slope, you bump something above you which is the boat. The current has created a hole under the boat and it is big enough that you could crawl under it a bit. I always back away at that point because the last thing you want to do is get hung on something while under the boat or have it somehow shift while you are under it. Last night though I reached under the boat and found two of those megs immediately. I spent a few more minutes reaching under the boat without crawling under it and did not find anything else so I backed away and focused on digging in the hole itself where I found the rest. You could go further under the boat but I would not chance it. It was a great night because any time I get out during the week it is a bonus. To find something nice on a weeknight is even better.

Sun 04/26/09 Nothing too special today. After three fossil shows and three sets of company (always a good time) in the last two months, it was just good to get back in the water.

Sat 04/25/09 I found one real killer Meg tooth and some nice large whale teeth. Not a bad day.

Sun 03/15/09 These are the teeth I found today. The center photos show verts, ears and other bones that I found this weekend.

Sat 03/14/09 The water is warming and it is nice to get back into the water for longer dives. The photo on the right shows a 6.25" Meg and 3" Mako. The best finds of the weekend.

Sat 02/28/09 I found one nice tooth and a bunch of bones. Nothing too exciting though.

Thu 02/19/09
Made a quick dive after work but did not find anything interesting. The water is over 50 deg now so it is warming a bit.

Mon 02/16/09 I went out for a dive after work and hit some nice teeth. The nicest is the small 3" tooth and the largest is just over 5.5" but it has a chipped tip. I found a crock tooth for my jaw and it fits nicely. I probably will not get out until Saturday. It will be a long week.

Sun Feb 15 I did not do much on the first half of my dive then I started hitting them. the vis w/ my light was around 6-8in. which is pretty good. I saw three of the four nicer teeth. They range from 4-3/8" to 5-1/16" It was a good dive.

Sat Feb 14 I found this really nice 5.4" tooth about 15 min into my dive. I found the half right next to it. I spent the next1.5 hours digging and came up empty. Still a good dive though.

Fri Feb 13 I was told not to dive on Fri the 13thbut I went anyhow. I am glad I went. I found one killer 4.25" tooth and some other fun stuff.

Wed 02/11/09

My first good day in awhile. The water is in the low 50's today. Three really nice Megs right around 4". The best part is my first 3" Mako of the year. A really nice lower, just a hair over 3".!!!!

Mon 02/09

One 4" meg and another broken one. I usually only make one dive per day when the water is in the high 40's. It feels really cold when you are not finding much.

Sun 02/08/09

I came up empty my last four dives. Today I found three 3.75"-3.90" megs before I came across the Mastodon tooth. I only find about two of these each year so I was pretty excited. It has a bit of the root and the cap is somewhat worn but it is still pretty nice.
